Helen Wang

Helen Wang is Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University, Sweden. Leading her research group since 2019, she studies how plasmid copy number control shapes bacterial pathogenesis and the evolution of antibiotic resistance. She combines molecular microbiology, infection biology, and computational approaches to uncover how plasmid copy number variation and cryptic plasmids influence the transmission and evolution of resistance genes. Using a systems biology framework, her work integrates genetic, biochemical and sequencing methods with multi-omics to analyze plasmid dynamics at single-cell resolution. By combining experimental microbiology with quantitative analyses across clinically relevant bacterial species, her research aims to reveal how interplays between host bacteria, plasmids, and resistance determinants generate adaptive diversity and drive antimicrobial resistance evolution.
