Søren Johannes Sørensen

Søren J. Sørensen received his PhD from the University of Copenhagen in 1993. He subsequently held positions at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Research Laboratory in Florida and at the School of Biology at Macquarie University in Australia, while maintaining his affiliation with the University of Copenhagen, where he has been Professor since 2005 and Head of the Section of Microbiology since 2008.

His research focuses on plasmid biology, horizontal gene transfer, and microbial interactions in complex communities. He has made major contributions to understanding how plasmids and other mobile genetic elements shape microbial cooperation, biofilm formation, community assembly, and adaptation in natural environments. More broadly, his work has helped establish an ecological framework in which gene exchange and community interactions are central to microbial function and evolution.
