Tong Zhang

Dr. Tong Zhang is a Chair Professor in Environmental Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Department of Civil Engineering, where he directs the Environmental Microbiome Engineering and Biotechnology Laboratory. He also holds a courtesy professorship at HKU’s School of Public Health. His research focuses on environmental microbiome and antibiotic resistance genes within the One Health framework. His group develop and apply long-read metagenomics, and bioinformatics to explores the roles of plasmids shaping resistomes in complex environments quantify ARG dissemination and microbiome dynamics. He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher from 2018 to 2025. HHe was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering in 2023.
