Jens Andre Hammerl has been a researcher at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) since 2005.
He studied biotechnology at the University of Applied Sciences Anhalt in Köthen, followed by periods at the Robert Koch Institute and Schering AG in Berlin. He completed his PhD at Humboldt University, Berlin, as part of a collaborative research project between the BfR and the Max Planck-Institute for Molecular Genetics, also in Berlin.
His research focuses on molecular microbiology and genomics. He is an expert in antimicrobial resistance and mobile genetic elements, particularly interested in their impact on bacteria's adaptation to environmental and artificial stress. He is also interested in the therapeutic use of bacteriophages.
